A return to the playoffs — with apologies to the 2020 bubble campaign — means many things for fans of the Vancouver Canucks, but none are bigger than the return of The Province tradition: playoff posters.

Since the early 90s, Province Sports has been delivering to its readers a daily series of Canucks player posters, as long as the Canucks’ playoff run lasts.

They were a highlight of Noah Juulsen’s childhood, for example. The Abbotsford-raised Canucks defenceman’s eyes lit up when he was asked this week about whether he collected them in his youth.

“I wasn’t reading the paper much,” he said with a laugh, “but I was definitely grabbing those posters.”

“My mom probably has them all still in a box somewhere.”

Ginger Sedlarova was The Province’s graphic artist for many years and was the last in-house designer of the posters, from 2007 until 2015.

She grew up a Canucks fan and had found memories of the early versions of the posters, which first truly drew attention during the 1994 run to the Stanley Cup final.

“It was one of the highlights of the job,” Sedlarova said.

“You’d spend entire days looking at Canucks photos and picking the best action pictures. It was a thrill for a Canucks fan. And people would ask me what I’d do and I’d tell them I do the Canucks posters for the paper and they’d go ‘really?!’ They thought it was so cool.”

And it was cool for her to see posters adorning walls and windows around town.

The idea is simple, she said:  “Fans want to see the photo and grab the page and put it on their wall.”

This spring we’re partnering with the Canucks to produce the posters for our print newspaper as well digital editions: to get the digital version delivered to your inbox, click here.
