May dazzled. Canadians in many parts of the country were treated to a rare solar storm that reached Earth, lighting up our skies with blues, greens and purples — the largest and brightest display of the aurora borealis in decades. While cameras across the country were capturing the magnificent scene, we here at Shopping Essentials pondered whether digital cameras were making their big return.

We asked simple yet important questions, like how to pick the right bike helmet and how to clean an air purifier, plus how to wash your pillows and how to prevent mosquito bites (and ticks, too.) We took a deep dive into expert-recommended sunscreens and broke down our favourite mineral SPFs. We reviewed top tech products like the new iPad Air and the trending Monos Hybrid suitcase. We outlined our favourite gifts for grads, dads and little lads (baby showers).

We are constantly searching for the best, most practical or efficient gadgets, tools, beauty products, home goods and services the Canadian marketplace has to offer. After extensive product testing, researching and reviewing, we narrow our list to offer our readers the best of the best. We’re often asked things like, “What’s on your wishlist?” or “What products are you most excited about?” If you’re curious about our favourite products of the moment (and why), read on.

Why I love it: “I recently celebrated my wedding overseas, and this garment bag came in clutch for keeping my wedding wardrobe intact. It’s a great (read: more affordable) alternative to the WallyBags version that doesn’t sacrifice any of the more expensive bag’s utility. I had more than enough room for my wedding gown and two other event dresses, plus my husband’s suit and dress shirts. There are even exterior pockets to hold shoes and other accessories. It’s a must-have for anyone who will be travelling this wedding season.” — Kate Mendonca, Shopping Editor

Loop Quiet 2 Earplugs

Loop Quiet 2 Earplugs

Why I love it: “I’ve been searching for the perfect bedtime solution to drown out my partner’s snoring, but still have the ability to hear my toddler down the hall if she wakes up in the middle of the night. The Quiet 2 earplugs help to muffle the sounds I don’t want to hear, without cancelling noise altogether. Do I still hear rumbles from the other side of the bed? Yes, but they’re much more tolerable. These also help me focus when working from a busy cafe or public space, plus they’re ultra-flexible (made from soft-touch silicone) making them a perfect fit for day or night, even as a side sleeper. ” — Leigh Taveroff, Shopping Editor

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Balm SPF 45

Why I love it: “This little sunscreen serum stick is worth the hype. I’m a big fan of Glow Recipe’s Dew + Glow line for its barely-there hydration and glass-skin results. If you want that glowy look without the heavy layers of liquid SPF products, I highly recommend the Dew Balm. It’s easy to take on to go for quick touch-ups throughout the day, and it works well under and over makeup, too. I love that it’s rated PA+++ and is enriched with the added skincare benefits of niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. The Dew Balm is my weapon of choice against UVA/UVB rays this summer.” — Jacqueline Osias, Deals Coordinator

Reitmans Sleeveless Linen Suit Vest

Why I love it: “Trust me when I say that a suiting vest is the style that every fashion fan needs in their wardrobe this summer. Recently back from a trip to Europe, I can confirm the style — in a wide variety of fits and lengths — was everywhere. Embrace the versatile piece, while supporting a Canadian brand, with this sweet linen style from Reitmans. Pair it with wide-leg jeans, matching linen trousers, a midi-length satin skirt … the list goes on.” — Aleesha Harris, Fashion Editor

Blume Glowy Skin Minis: Travel Size Best Sellers Kit

Why I love it: “Canadian sisters Bunny & Taran are the minds behind Blume, a Vancouver-based skincare brand that aims to make self care easier through their skincare and period products. I have combination skin that is prone to breakouts when I’m stressed, and Blume’s Glowy Skin kit is my current obsession for keeping my skin smooth and clear. The travel size bottles were a great way to try out the brand without committing to full-size products, but I have a feeling that I’ll be repurchasing the larger bottles as soon as I’m through this kit.” — Kate Mendonca, Shopping Editor

Frizz + co Repairing Hair Mask.

Repairing Hair Mask by Frizz + co

Why I love it: “Frizz + co is a Montreal-based brand by Daphné Eastmond. In 2020, Eastmond quit her job to establish this brand, developing products for her textured hair. The Repairing Hair Mask is made in Canada from natural ingredients including rosemary oil, baobab oil and ama-leaf. I’ve tried the mask on my unruly curl and appreciate the deep conditioning the mask provides. Apply it after you wash your curls, comb it through thoroughly, let it sit for 30 minutes and rinse. The brand recommends using it weekly.” — Randi Mann, Shopping Editor

Everlayer Beach Towel

Everlayer Beach Towel

Why I love it: “This Med-inspired beach towel is made from 100 per cent long-staple cotton — the highest in quality and durability — making it the perfect beach or lake accessory. It’s created by a new Canadian home textiles brand deeply rooted in slow fashion; and one that takes sustainability practices seriously. It’s a lightweight and quick drying fouta — a thin patterned cotton or linen fabric, typically of Tunisian origin — think Turkish towel, with super soft terry on the back.” — Leigh Taveroff, Shopping Editor

Buffalo High Rise Wide Leg Addie

Buffalo High Rise Wide Leg Addie

Why I love it:These ‘Addies’ in Indigo (also available in Acid Wash and Antique Sanded Blue) have quickly become my go-to pair when I’m in a rush. I’d even go so far as to say that they are comparable in quality to AGOLDE but at a much more attractive price. The brand is based in Montréal but was born in France, the birthplace of denim, so you can trust a pair of Buffalo jeans. I love how comfortable and flattering the classic wide-leg is in all the right places (the high rise cinches my waist just right and gives the booty a little lift, too). The Addies are feasting, dancing and strolling approved.” — Jacqueline Osias, Deals Coordinator

VIGYL Hanlan’s Candle

Why I love it: “Enjoy a summery pistachio and bergamot candle from the Canadian fragrance house that takes a genderless approach to an overwhelmingly feminine industry, with a goal of creating an inclusive communal experience. Every purchase of the Hanlan’s Candle supports LGBTQI+ Rainbow Railroad, with $10 from every sale going directly to the charity all Pride Month (June) long. This 60-hour soy wax candle is hand-poured in Montreal, is clean burning and comes in a cute reusable tinted-glass vessel.”  — Leigh Taveroff, Shopping Editor

ALDO Kitti Heeled Mule

Why I love it: “I searched high and low for a walkable, wearable heeled sandal. And I found it in this kitten-heel style. Purchasing a pair with a specific event in mind, I’m happy to report that I’ve worn them on repeat ever since. The low heel makes these sandals comfortable while the squared-toe shape serves to add a few extra fashion points to the design. The perfect heeled sandal really does exist.” — Aleesha Harris, Fashion Editor

Genestra Brands Collagen Liquid Enhanced

Genestra Brands Collagen Liquid Enhanced

Why I love it: “I recently finished a bottle of collagen and I’m hooked. I’ve been struggling with acne so I decided to try collagen after consulting with a naturopath. Genestra is a trusted Canadian brand providing professional-grade supplements for over 30 years. Their products are formulated with high-quality ingredients and are supported by clinical or traditional evidence. The collagen is easy to take (even on an empty stomach) and has a pleasant berry candy flavour, making it an even easier beauty and longevity hack to add to your daily routine. While I haven’t noticed the anti-aging effects yet, I’ve noticed clearer and more radiant skin after over a month of use. I’m now onto my second bottle and really impressed with the results so far.” — Jacqueline Osias, Deals Coordinator

Rhode Peptide Lip Treatment

Rhode Peptide Lip Treatment

Why I love it: “This lip treatment from Hailey Bieber’s skincare range seriously rivals the viral Laneige Sleeping Lip Mask, and costs a fraction of the price. The peptides help to subtly plump my lips for a glazed daytime look, but I especially love slathering on a thick layer at bedtime and letting it soak in overnight for perfectly pillowy, hydrated lips come morning. I find the moisture gets locked in, so this is a great option for even the driest of lips.” — Leigh Taveroff, Shopping Editor

Mejuri Lab Grown Diamond Huggies

Why I love it: “If you’re looking for a way to add some extra sparkle to your summer ear stack, look no further than these chic lab-grown diamond huggies from Mejuri. Part of the Toronto-headquartered jewelry brand’s growing collection of certified lab-grown diamond styles, the petite hoops feature bezel-set diamonds (they’re giving champagne bubbles to me) set in 14-karat gold.” Aleesha Harris, Fashion Editor
